NCR to Base Point-of-Sale Products on Intel Specification

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2003--

Standardization Strategy Will Reduce Risk for Retailers, Improve

Price-Performance and Enable Faster Implementation of New Technology

Launching a new era of enhanced point-of-sale (POS) performance and investment protection for retailers, NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today announced that its latest generation POS products will be among the industry's first to be built around an Intel-driven industry design specification.

Known as EmbeddedATX, the specification outlines the standard features and size of the main circuit board - or "motherboard" - for specialized computers such as POS terminals. Standardizing on motherboard design speeds system development while improving upgradeability for end users.

"We have worked closely with NCR to take this specification to the next step and design one of the first EmbeddedATX motherboards for retail POS terminals," said Jon Stine, global industry manager for retail consumer package goods, Intel. "Retailers purchasing NCR products based on EmbeddedATX will gain expanded options for extending the life of their systems and taking advantage of the latest advancements in technology."

The benefits of NCR's EmbeddedATX strategy include making it possible for retailers to upgrade their POS terminals by simply replacing the motherboard rather than buying all new hardware.

"By adopting the Intel EmbeddedATX specification for POS and kiosks, NCR is providing retailers with the power and flexibility that will be necessary as the requirements for these devices evolve," said Mark Rein, director of extended retail solutions for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, one of the world's largest providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services. "NCR is definitely proving itself to be a leader in this space by combining increased performance, functionality and interoperability; a forward looking chipset; and a very attractive total cost of ownership projection."

NCR RealPOS(TM) 80 Available with EmbeddedATX Motherboard

NCR also announced that the NCR RealPOS 80 terminal is now available with its new EmbeddedATX-based POS motherboard, which currently supports Intel(R)-based processors, including the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor.

Introduced in January 2003, the NCR RealPOS 80 is the first and only POS terminal that allows for comprehensive accessibility and serviceability on replaceable parts without the use of tools. As flexible as it is easy to service, the NCR RealPOS 80 can be configured for modular or integrated environments, it can function as a traditional POS or self-service device, and retailers can choose from a wide range of peripheral options.

A pioneer in open systems computing, NCR launched one of the first computers based on industry standard hardware and software, the NCR Tower, in 1982. In 1996, NCR was among the first vendors to release an Intel(R) Pentium(R) processor-based terminal with true PC compatibility.

"The introduction of an EmbeddedATX motherboard on the NCR RealPOS 80 is another example of NCR's tradition of innovation and our long-standing commitment to open industry standards," said Pete Bartolotta, vice president of retail solutions product management for NCR. "We plan to take advantage of the EmbeddedATX specification for other retail industry solutions. It also will enable us to take advantage of new developments such as Intel(R) Centrino(TM) mobile technology."
