NCR's ATM Security Technology Recognized for Fraud Prevention Innovation in the Retail Banking Market; Solidcore for APTRA(TM) Part of NCR Secure(TM) -- a Holistic Approach to Self-Service Protection

DAYTON, Ohio, Jun 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- "The Banker" Technology Awards 2006 has named NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) as the winner of the "Fraud Prevention Innovation in Retail Banking" category. "The Banker" is a leading global banking publication headquartered in London. Independently judged by global financial-industry leaders, the competition recognizes best-in-class innovation and success in financial technology. This is the fourth consecutive year that NCR has been named a winner in the competition for its various self-service technologies and the second such recognition specific to fraud prevention.

This year, NCR took top honors for its unique security solution for automated teller machine- (ATM) channel software, known as Solidcore for APTRA(TM). This first-of-its-kind approach to controlling the banking-software environment includes countermeasures against potential risks of compromise of the ATM channel, as well as innovative functionality to support regulatory compliance such as Sarbanes-Oxley.

NCR adapted technology first developed and deployed by Palo Alto, Calif.-based Solidcore Systems, a leading developer of IT change control solutions for enterprise, government and OEM applications. NCR's Solidcore for APTRA was recognized for providing the best challenge to the criminal element by reducing the need for real-time patch updates and by getting to the heart of the issue in fraud, whether perpetrated by internal or external parties.

Bob Tramontano, vice president of self-service for NCR's Financial Solutions Division, said, "Solidcore for APTRA's innovative software and IT protection is an important component of NCR Secure, our holistic approach to self-service channel protection. At NCR, we're serious about continuing to help the industry anticipate, plan and implement best-in-class strategies that help maintain consumer trust in the ATM channel."

NCR recognized that the financial services industry continues to be focused on potential traditional threats to the IT environment, such as worms and viruses. Confident that the future will bring other threats, business risks and regulatory compliance issues, Solidcore for APTRA provides a strategic answer to the real, underlying issue of ATM-channel interference: unauthorized code from illicit sources. The integrated technology permits only authorized code to run, thereby protecting good code from tampering or hijacking.

Robert Sandie, executive vice president of Solidcore's Worldwide Operations, said, "While the overwhelming majority of ATM transactions take place every day without incident, we know that fraud migrates to the point of least resistance. With Solidcore for APTRA, we've taken proven technology and married that to NCR's robust APTRA software and unique global perspective of the financial-services industry. This is very exciting news for the industry."

"We believe that ATM security and channel integrity rely on a holistic approach to securing the entire cash cycle and network," added Tramontano. "It is certainly an honor to be recognized for best-in-class technology, but we know that the best approach is not only about technology. It's also about knowing what part people and processes play in relation to an ATM that is part of a broader network enterprise. Security is at the core of everything we do."
