NCR Unveils Comprehensive ATM Fraud Detection Technology and Security Consultancy Service; Holistic Approach Protects the Entire Cash Management Cycle and ATM Components

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2005--NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) announces the introduction of a comprehensive response to combat automated teller machine (ATM) fraud. The latest addition to NCR's arsenal of ATM security offers is its patented Intelligent Fraud Detection solution that combines best-in-class hardware, software and professional services. Drawing on the company's global knowledge of ATM fraud trends and its understanding of best-practice security strategies, NCR is now also offering a security consultancy service to ensure financial institutions fully understand new security threats and available technology.

ATM fraud, like credit-card and other retail fraud, is a matter of utmost concern to ATM owners and operators. NCR joins the financial services industry in recognizing the importance of maintaining consumer confidence in the ATM channel. NCR's holistic approach is the first to recognize and offer a comprehensive answer to protecting the entire cash management cycle, from ink-staining technology at the point of cash-in-transit delivery through enhanced protection of the various ATM components that criminals may attempt to breach.

Common instances of fraud, which the NCR solution is designed to combat, include attachment of false fronts, cameras or other devices. These include the placement of card skimming and trapping devices over the card entry slot, the use of miniature cameras and the installation of devices that trap cash once it has been dispensed.

NCR's unique approach to ATM fraud prevention is designed to detect more types of fraudulent devices than any other on the market today. The Intelligent Fraud Detection solution was devised to detect criminal attempts to tamper with a variety of ATM components, including those in the card reader and cash exit areas, as well as illicit attempts to add covert cameras. It will monitor and recognize attempts to place these fraudulent devices on the ATM and is not limited by the type of material used in the device.

Before such a compromise has taken place, NCR's Intelligent Fraud Detection technology can send an automatic alert to the financial institution. This can provide bank management with the option of shutting down the ATM or alerting services personnel, branch employees or even law enforcement authorities. Because NCR's technology detects whether a fraudulent ATM device is placed on or removed, the financial institution can track which customer cards have been used while the fraudulent device was in place. This information helps to identify potentially vulnerable customer accounts, making it easier to take preventative or corrective measures such as stopping fund withdrawals on those accounts.

Andrew Orent, vice president of NCR's Financial Solutions Division, Americas region, said, "ATMs already make use of sensor technology internally, but this is a radically different solution with expanded detection capabilities for external foreign objects. It is one step in a holistic approach that ensures no one point in the cash management cycle is perceived as more vulnerable than any another point."

In addition to Intelligent Fraud Detection, NCR offers a variety of related complementary countermeasures to fraud, including triple data encryption solutions compliant with Visa and MasterCard standards, advanced software security, Fluiditi ink-staining technology, the latest CEN-L safes and other risk reduction features.
