Creative new solution provides extreme availability during scheduled downtime, unplanned temporary outages or disaster

SEATTLE, Sep 24, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR), announced the release of Teradata(R) Warehouse 7.1, a suite of enhanced data warehousing hardware and software that maximizes data warehouse availability, reliability and flexibility. Engineered for businesses that depend on their data warehouse for mission-critical applications that drive revenue, customer satisfaction and employee productivity, Teradata Warehouse 7.1 sets a new industry standard.

Teradata Warehouse 7.1 suite includes the new Teradata Dual Systems offer, NCR Backup, Archive and Restore (BAR) solutions, the flagship Teradata Database V2R5.1, Teradata Tools and Utilities 7.1 and the two new more powerful servers, the NCR 4980 Server and the NCR 5380 Server.

"Our customers need greater performance levels than ever before and have higher availability requirements to ensure the continuity of their business," said Vickie Farrell, vice president of Teradata warehouse marketing. "As the use of active data warehousing continues to grow, Teradata Warehouse 7.1 provides customers extreme availability and performance."

Teradata Business Continuity Solutions, announced in Spring 2003, ensures data warehouse availability when outages occur. It has been expanded to include the Teradata Dual Systems offer, which maintains data warehouse availability during scheduled downtime and unplanned temporary outages or in case of a disaster that destroys an entire system. Designed for businesses that rely on the data warehouse, it provides continuous availability, recoverability and performance continuity for critical business applications.

With traditional data warehouses, the backup or redundant system sits idle until needed, which is expensive and an inefficient use of resources. The new Teradata Dual Systems offer provides the ability to deploy the redundant system as a part of the production environment, allowing users and applications access to both systems simultaneously. By remotely locating the redundant system, a faster disaster recovery is achieved should an entire system be lost. This approach protects customers' data and enables a timely recovery, which, depending on the business needs, can be completed within seconds.

Teradata Dual Systems protects data availability from planned and unplanned downtime. During a scheduled maintenance window or outage, users and applications can be temporarily redirected to the redundant system. The result is extreme data warehouse availability offering customers access to their data during single system outages. By making the second system a synchronized production system instead of sitting idle, it increases the business value and provides cost justification for a dual environment.

"The innovative Teradata Dual Systems offer provides customers real business value. They can work on both the production and backup systems, with virtually no downtime," said Farrell.

The NCR BAR solution protects businesses' data by backing it up on the newest generation of tape drives and libraries. The data is safely archived and then made available when necessary. The NCR BAR solution has been upgraded to provide the latest enterprise data storage library or tape Storage Area Network (SAN) support for Teradata. Instead of backing up data to a proprietary tape storage library, Teradata now enables businesses to save the data to a SAN shared with other databases. This capability provides businesses significant cost savings because existing tape libraries can more efficiently be utilized.

In response to the increasing demand from businesses migrating to Teradata, the Teradata database V2R5.1 enhancements make it faster and simpler to move and develop data warehousing applications in the Teradata database. The new User Defined Functions (UDFs) are programming shortcuts that make it easier to create customized database functions in Teradata database. Teradata's library of UDFs includes mathematical, business, and other functions. Businesses can save time and money by reducing the need for the manual development of new Structured Query Language to recreate the functions that may already be in use in their applications.

In addition, the Teradata database now provides the ability to store and retrieve large objects like documents, audio, video and pictures, which have many business uses. Retailers can electronically collect credit-card signatures at the time of sale to access them to verify card usage and fight fraud. Large manufacturers can electronically store blueprints for easy access by engineering teams.

The Teradata Warehouse 7.1 suite will be generally available for shipment at the end of the fourth quarter 2003.
