NCR Provides Currency-Management Solution to UBS AG; Bank Looking to Reduce Cash Holdings by 25 Percent

May 27, 2003 at 10:02 AM EDT

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 2003--NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today announced a deal with UBS AG, the leading bank in Switzerland and one of the top 10 banks in the world, to deliver a complete currency-management solution. The solution is being introduced to enable cost savings in the way UBS supplies cash to its automated teller machines (ATM) and to its branches in Switzerland. UBS is looking to reduce cash holdings by 25 percent.

NCR has overall responsibility for the project and has partnered with Transoft International Inc., the world's leading provider of cash management solutions, to implement and maintain Transoft's OptiCash and OptiNet software.

"Our decision to go with NCR is the result of an extensive evaluation," said Dorothee Borer, UBS project manager for cash management. "The key evaluation criteria were their experience, the maturity of the software solution and the number of reference sites around the world."

Using OptiCash, a solution that applies mathematical algorithms to historical, event and cost information, UBS will be able to optimize the level of cash held at its branches and ATMs (1,300 outlets in total) in Switzerland. This approach leads to obvious benefits in terms of reduction in interest and cash-handling costs.

"ATMs must continue to represent the highest levels of customer convenience. An ATM with too much cash costs banks unnecessarily, and an ATM that runs out of cash directly impacts customer satisfaction. Managing cash effectively will ensure UBS's costs are kept to a minimum and also, more importantly, the service provided through UBS's ATMs can be relied on by their customers," said Paul Thuer of NCR's Financial Solutions Division in Switzerland. "NCR is partnering with best-in-class Transoft to ensure UBS achieves its targeted decrease in cash holdings and resultant cost reductions."

UBS has begun to implement the solution, and a pilot operation involving 150 "cash points" (ATMs and branches) is scheduled to begin in October 2003.
