Teradata Extends Industry Lead in Data Warehouse Availability for Business Users; Business Continuity Solution is Cost-Effective and Easy to Deploy

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 2003--Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR), announced the on-time shipment of Teradata(R) Warehouse version 7.0.1 with new product functionality and services that enhance the availability of the data warehouse for frontline business users who rely on the information to make revenue-generating business decisions.

"Teradata, long recognized for its dominant role in enterprise data warehousing, has been rated the industry leader in system availability by a major industry analyst firm," said Vickie Farrell, vice president of Teradata Warehouse marketing. "Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 further outpaces the competition because it is a cost-effective solution that has advanced capabilities to keep the data warehouse operating at peak performance."

Businesses cannot afford to have unexpected system degradation and outages when sales revenue and employee productivity are dependent on data warehouses that are fast becoming mission-critical. Downtime and degraded performance can be costly. The enhancements incorporated into Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 provide a tangible benefit for cost-conscious executives.

Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 provides performance continuity that is cost-effective and easy to deploy. Teradata systems have built-in node protection and fail-over capability that don't require the purchase of additional software or consulting services. With the Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 solution, the protection is significantly expanded with two new components, Hot Standby Nodes and Large Cliques. They can be configured in a system to work independently or together to maximize performance.

Hot Standby Node -- Maintains consistent system performance in the unlikely event of interruption. If there is any type of node outage, that node's workload is automatically redirected to the Hot Standby Node, which is always ready. The system's performance is never degraded because the other nodes aren't required to work harder. Once the failed node is replaced, it remains in a waiting status until the next time the system is restarted, thereby increasing system availability by eliminating an unplanned restart.

Large Cliques -- Minimizes the impact of a node outage on end-users. The number of nodes in a Large Clique, or group of nodes, has been expanded from a maximum of four nodes to eight to support larger Teradata Warehouse systems. If there is an outage of one node in an eight-node Large Clique, the impact on system performance is minimized because the workload is automatically distributed across the other seven nodes, instead of the smaller three-node configuration. Once the node is replaced, the customer has the flexibility to bring the system back to full performance by immediately restarting the system or waiting until the next planned restart.

Along with the new Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 functionality, Teradata offers a portfolio of business continuity consulting services that provide protection in the event of a disaster. Teradata Business Continuity Services offer shared and dedicated system disaster recovery options that are designed to keep the data warehouse operational.

For businesses with the most demanding availability requirements, Teradata offers custom services to implement a dedicated, fully redundant architecture, which enables recovery within minutes. Businesses with recovery requirements that are less demanding can take advantage of one of Teradata's recovery centers, a subscription-based service providing shared access to a Teradata recovery facility.

Teradata Warehouse 7.0.1 provides customers a selection of three new storage solutions: NCR Enterprise Storage 6841-2456 with 36 GB drives, NCR Enterprise Storage 6841-6456, with 73 GB drives, and NCR/EMC DMX Storage, with 73 GB drives. These solutions offer flexibility in storage configuration based on the customer's performance requirements.
