March 17, 2003 at 11:33 AM EST
CAPE TOWN, Mar 17, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Score Supermarkets, a subsidiary of South Africa's Pick 'n Pay Stores Limited, has selected point-of-sale (POS) software and hardware from NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) for its 180 stores throughout the country.

The solution, provided by NCR's South African distributor, National Data Systems, includes the NCR Advanced Store@Retail software platform with NCR RealPOS(TM) 80c POS workstations, NCR RealScan(TM) bar code scanners, NCR RealPOS thermal receipt printers and in-store computers. Installation is already underway, and the rollout to all Score locations is planned for completion in 2004.

Score chose the NCR solution after reviewing a number of competing store automation offerings including local PC-on-a-cash-drawer solutions.

NCR Advanced Store@Retail is a multiplatform software package that adapts easily to the specific needs of different geographic markets and store formats. It provides a complete, turnkey POS solution for retail stores, from checkout to Web-based back office, giving people throughout the enterprise greater access to information.

Designed to deliver exceptional performance, flexibility and value, the NCR RealPOS 80c is a compact POS workstation that combines advanced technology and retail-hardened reliability. The open and scalable platform allows retailers to select from best-of-breed POS solutions available for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) or Linux.

"This important technology initiative will enable Score to drive greater efficiency and productivity in its store operations, which in turn enhances customer service and value," said Alberto Camuri, vice president of NCR's Retail Solutions Division for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "NCR's store automation solutions provide simplicity and convenience in store operations at the checkout and the back office, helping meet the real-world needs of retailers globally."
