NCR RealScan(TM) 7832 harnesses "thumb power" for low-cost operation
NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today introduced a small, cordless bar-code scanner available for less than $100.Dubbed "Scan Companion," the NCR RealScan 7832 is designed for scanning hard-to-reach or heavy items, helping retailers keep their high-volume checkouts moving smoothly. The new scanner is also handy for other applications, such as "queue busting," creating gift registries or inventory management.

"With its small size and breakthrough price, the Scan Companion gives retailers a new, cost-effective way to further improve customer service and productivity."
The Scan Companion harnesses the energy that is generated when the operator pushes a thumb button located on top of the scanner. This unique approach eliminates the need for a motor or other device to move the scanner's laser beam, keeping initial cost and power usage low. Three AAA batteries, used to power the light source and electronics, generally last through 20,000 scans.
In its cordless mode, the NCR RealScan 7832 stores up to 400 bar codes in memory for automatic uploading when placed its docking station. The Scan Companion also can be tethered to the host point-of-sale terminal or scanner for immediate data entry.
NCR will demonstrate the NCR RealScan 7832 to retailers at the Food Marketing Institute's annual technology convention, MARKETECHNICS(R), Feb. 23-25 in Dallas.
