ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2002--NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today announced that The Pantry, Inc. (Nasdaq:PTRY), the leading convenience store operator in the southeastern United States, has signed an order for NCR bar code scanners.

The Pantry plans to install NCR RealScan(TM) 7892 Bi-Modal Presentation Scanners in 310 stores by the end of 2002, as the chain introduces bar code scanning into its operations.

"We found the NCR RealScan 7892 to be rugged and reliable, with features that make it well-suited to the convenience store environment," said Ed Collupy, vice president of Information Services for The Pantry. "For example, it gives our associates flexibility in the way they scan, making their jobs easier and helping them to be more productive."

Collupy also said the new NCR scanners will help The Pantry collect accurate, detailed data on the food and merchandise it sells, enabling the chain to improve the effectiveness of its inventory and merchandise management processes.

With the NCR RealScan 7892, sales associates can choose the scanning mode - presentation or pass-by - that is most comfortable and best fits their needs. Cashiers can position the scanner on the counter for scanning smaller objects; or, because it is compact and lightweight, they can hold the scanner in their hand to read bar codes on large or heavy objects.

The NCR RealScan 7892 also is available with a selectable single-line scanning pattern that enables the user to accurately target and read a single bar code among many.

"We're excited about partnering with The Pantry in their initial venture into scanning," said Pierre Abboud, vice president and general manager, NCR RealScan. "With its fast read rate and durability, the NCR RealScan 7892 can assure them of improved efficiency at the point of sale, together with an attractive total cost of ownership."
