SMA Franchisee is First Supermarket Chain in Italy to Order NCR Electronic Shelf Label Solution; NCR Reseller HighTech wins NCR RealPrice Order

June 6, 2002 at 11:02 AM EDT
MILAN, Italy, Jun 6, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) today announced that an SMA supermarket in Rome will be the first in Italy to deploy the NCR RealPrice(TM) electronic shelf label (ESL) solution.

The Rocca Group will equip one of its SMA stores with 10,000 ESL tags this month, and plans to roll out the solution to the rest of its stores later this year. With seven locations in Rome, Rocca is the largest franchisee of the SMA Group, which has more than 430 stores throughout the country.

ESLs are digital tags that can be attached to shelves or other store fixtures, where they display pricing and other information in large, clear characters. The wireless NCR RealPrice ESL solution is linked to the same computer file used by the store's point-of-sale system, so shoppers are assured that when their purchases are scanned at checkout, the price will match the price in the aisle.

HighTech srl, an NCR authorized reseller based in Rome, secured the sale. HighTech will partner with NCR and TecnoLogica srl, an application software company, for system integration, installation, and other services to assure a successful implementation.

Following an in-depth evaluation, Rocca Group selected the NCR solution to help improve customer service and to develop more proactive marketing practices.

"With the NCR RealPrice solution, we anticipate saving time and costs associated with changing price labels in our stores," said Rocca President Mario Rocca. "More important, this technology will allow us to implement innovative and effective promotions - by product, by department, by day of the week, or even by time of day - quickly and easily."

Because the NCR RealPrice solution is completely wireless from ceiling to shelf, it is easy to install, and store layout changes and resets can be made with minimal disruption to operations. Price changes can be implemented with a few computer keystrokes, enabling stores to effectively implement price optimization programs while saving the time and the expense of replacing paper labels. In addition, NCR's labels can display promotional information for customers or product inventory information for store employees.

The first company to offer a wireless system, NCR is a global leader in ESL technology.

"ESLs are recognized as a valuable tool for improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness of retail operations," said Pete Bartolotta, NCR RealPrice vice president and general manager. "NCR RealPrice is a highly flexible solution that can be deployed in a wide variety of stores for effective price management of a few hundred to tens of thousands of items."
