NCR First To Offer ATMs with Microsoft Windows XP

September 20, 2001 at 11:45 AM EDT
LONDON, Sep 20, 2001 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) today announced its intention to offer Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP to its self- service customers. A significant number of NCR customers have already benefited by migrating from the traditional OS/2 operating system to NCR's APTRA(TM) suite of self-service software (currently based on Windows NT). These benefits include additional functionality such as ticketing, intelligent deposit, advertising and one-to-one marketing as well as development productivity. NCR sees moving forward with Windows XP as a natural progression to the self-service software developments.

Windows XP is Microsoft's new operating system for home and business users, scheduled for release on October 25, 2001. Built on an enhanced Windows 2000 engine, Windows XP has already been heralded as Microsoft's most robust operating system, the development of which establishes a new standard in power, reliability, security and simplicity.

While the self-service industry has been well served over the last 10 to 15 years with OS/2, it is now faced with technology that is unable to meet the ever-increasing demands of consumers.

Jim Piggot, software and services vice president at NCR's Financial Solutions Division, points out, "Consumers don't just demand the best, they have access to the best in their everyday lives. Today, visual stimulation is everywhere -- cable TV, game consoles, electronic billboards. We even have movie stars that are computer-engineered images. ATMs are still the most widely used financial channel, and we believe they should present consumers with a similar stimulating user experience."

NCR led the industry in introducing Windows NT and APTRA into the marketplace. "Windows XP is the next step in our drive to enhance the consumer experience," said Piggot. "The graphical and digital enhancements in XP, coupled with the significantly enhanced development capability and security, meet all our requirements regarding consumer and corporate security, reliability and usability."

APTRA already has strong global coverage, and the open-platform environment and multi-vendor self-service software architecture enable customers to offer traditional self-service functionality in a more effective way. It also enables easy development of new business opportunities, quickly and across channels. By using APTRA, customers are already profiting from new deposit automation capabilities, marketing campaign management, personalization and cross-channel selling, and they are able to meet the latest legislative requirements in areas such as encryption or audio assistance.

Charmaine Gravning, product manager for Windows XP at Microsoft, said, "Microsoft is pleased to be working with NCR to provide the best computing experience to the self-service channel through Windows XP and to provide NCR's customers with revenue generating opportunities via enhanced functionality."
