ANAHEIM, Calif., Aug 23, 2001 /PRNewswire/ --

Teradata(R) Database V2R4.1 software enthusiastically endorsed by business partners

Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), today announced the on-schedule shipment of its flagship data warehousing software, Teradata(R) Database V2R4.1. Endorsed and certified by a number of Teradata business partners, Teradata Database V2R4.1 has been designed to power an active data warehouse, the next generation of global data warehouses.

The Teradata Database V2R4.1 engine enhances Teradata's ability to offer the benefits of active data warehousing to customers. It provides businesses with improved decision making through new speed and agility in storing, analyzing and interpreting data on consumer behavior and then getting the business intelligence to front-line employees empowering them to better serve the consumers and ultimately propel growth.

Teradata has partnered with leading software vendors to offer data warehousing solutions to customers. The following partners have tested and certified that their software is compatible with Teradata Database V2R4.1: Ab Initio, Ambeo, Brio, Business Objects, Cognos, Entreon, Hyperion, Informatica, MicroStrategy and SAS.

"We have beta-tested Teradata Database V2R4.1, and it has been enthusiastically adopted by our business partners," said Vickie Farrell, Teradata marketing vice president. "It is simple to install with minimal ongoing management and it powers a range of critical business applications with unmatched speed and accuracy."

Teradata Database V2R4.1 is the powerful database engine and primary component of the previously announced Teradata(R) Warehouse 6.1, which is a suite of data warehousing software that also includes several client utilities and Teradata(R) Warehouse Miner.

Because of the Teradata Database V2R4.1 progressive technology, a business can combine the data stored in separate locations into one centralized, powerful database engine. This centralization creates a consistent, up-to- date, single view of the business and offers the capability to run critical applications such as demand chain management, customer relationship management (CRM), data mining, customer profitability analysis and e-business offerings.

To boost speed and deliver instant decision making, Teradata Database V2R4.1 continues to add more functions that run inside the database engine. Teradata first moved data mining and online analytical processing (OLAP) inside the database in 1998. Executing functions within the database saves precious time, because it is no longer necessary to transfer large amounts of data in and out of the database as it is processed. In addition, the Teradata Database has always leveraged the power of parallelism, which allows many servers to work concurrently on the same job. By sharing work, they dramatically shrink the processing time.

In addition to speed, accuracy is critical when relying on data to make insightful business decisions. Working in a single integrated database, Teradata allows for an exhaustive review of all data, not just a sample that may offer misleading clues to customer behavior. Especially important for credit card companies that analyze immense amounts of data to spot patterns of misuse, this technology enables them to catch fraud without delay.

There have been many technical enhancements to improve speed, accuracy and to simplify management. For example, the number of temporary tables that a system creates on-the-fly has been increased to improve the capability of the database to analyze data without impacting performance. In addition, the size of data blocks have been expanded so that users can now gather more data with fewer disk reads, thus taking advantage of larger disks and delivering higher performance.

Teradata Database V2R4.1 can be ordered on UNIX and Windows 2000.
