May 14, 2001 at 10:08 AM EDT

DAYTON, Ohio, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) and Japanese technology conglomerate Marubeni Corporation today announced that the two companies have established a joint venture, Marubeni Network Systems Corporation (MNET), to provide e-business network infrastructure solutions so that businesses in Japan can leverage the Internet to establish or enhance their e-business presence.

MNET will initially focus on two key market segments in Japan: helping large multi-tenant office owners provide network connectivity to each of their tenants, and helping companies with multiple store and office locations, such as large retailers, with their networking requirements.

"NCR has a long-established presence in Japan, and the MNET venture will greatly enhance that presence by expanding our e-business services capability," said Gerry Gagliardi, senior vice president of NCR Worldwide Customer Services. "MNET will help our joint customers simplify networking infrastructure, rapidly deploy new systems and maximize system uptime."

Marubeni will provide the resources for construction of the core network backbone. NCR will provide a full range of information technology services for planning, building and optimizing the e-business infrastructure. These specific services include network design, consulting, hardware implementation, systems integration, and multivendor maintenance and support.

"This joint venture will combine Marubeni's extensive capabilities and industry experience with NCR's services delivery infrastructure and global e-business experience," added Masahiro Asano, MNET executive president. "The benefit to businesses is a single source provider for all of their network requirements."

MNET will concentrate on the Japanese market with the expectation towards future geographic expansion.
