DAYTON, Ohio, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Postal Service (USPS) awarded the NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) a three-year contract to provide the USPS "Retail Data Mart" supporting USPS retail operations that include over 20,000 post offices across the country. The value of phase-one is approximately $4 million, and is expected to be completed during the first half of 2001.

The contract includes NCR's Teradata(R) database, professional services and the NCR retailDecisions(TM) suite of analytical applications. Using information gathered from its new Point of Service ONE terminals, many of which were previously purchased from NCR, the USPS will be able to perform enhanced decision support at the local, district, area, and national levels. The USPS "Retail Data Mart" will enable the USPS to improve customer service and control inventory as well as determine appropriate labor and service requirements.

"By being able to gather and analyze sales data more quickly, we will be able to serve our customers better at retail," said Pam Gibert, USPS vice president, Retail, Consumers and Small Business. "The new system will give us more complete reporting on all retail transactions.

"For example," Gibert continued, "postmasters can get reports showing what times of day they get the most traffic, so they can plan accordingly and have the retail counters staffed appropriately at the busiest times. The system will also ensure that inventory is adequately stocked. If sales data indicate that one area of the country has a greater demand for a particular item, we'll be able to reallocate inventory to meet the demand."

Van H. Aggelakos, president of NCR's Government Systems Corp. said, "NCR established itself as a major USPS technology supplier through the Point-of- Service ONE project, for which we have installed more than 14,000 retail workstations at post offices throughout the county. Our track record as a technology supplier, our extensive knowledge of decision support solutions and the proven scalability of our decision support technology to handle large volumes of data means we have the ability to provide a robust solution that meets the Postal Service's current and future business needs. NCR's Teradata solution will be able to easily manage the expected volume of data collected from over 20,000 post offices."

The three-year USPS / NCR contract has two one-year contract options. It is anticipated that the final phase will be completed in 2005.
